In May of 2013, I attended a special 4-day course heading up the Village Building Convergence called the “Village Building Design Course” (VBDC) in Portland, OR. Covering topics all relevant in the A-to-Z of making Placemaking happen in other cities and in our own neighborhood! I thought it would be a great opportunity to present my AlleyUp project and get some useful feedback. As well as, learn some skills about transforming space into place.
We covered topics such as, how to invite neighbors to meetings and gatherings, facilitating design charrettes, patterns in nature and organizing work parties. It was an opportunity to do role play, to hear other’s experience and to feel comforted that there are many more placemakers all over the world.
During the month of May the Village Building Convergence was doing a month long conference that was a little like a festival and a lot like a neighborhood improvement. Portlanders came out from far and wide to support new and old neighborhood placemaking projects.
